Planet Forward

Planet Forward, a project based at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs, engages a diverse audience of college students from across the country and uses storytelling, media, and educational events to tell the stories of invention and innovation that can move the planet forward. Led by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Sesno, he formed Planet Forward in 2009 to empower new voices and lead a global conversation on the planet’s future. Check out their platform here.

Environmental Comics Classroom

Comics and cartoons are often dismissed as a frivolous art form designed to elicit giggles and goofiness. While there is ample room for humor in comics, Joy Reeves (Creator-in-Chief) believes that their value transcends humor alone. Comics have the power to convey social messages, awaken heroism, and change minds. The archetypal “good vs. evil” narrative that propels so many graphic novels are a vibrant way to frame environmental injustices for kids to understand. Through this underutilized medium, I aim to engage younger students, make environmental science accessible to all, and to bring to life more characters who are underrepresented in STEM fields.

As an artist, I believe that living an ethical life means using art as a tool to meaningfully engage an audience on social justice issues. Art is not merely a quiet, relaxing hobby; it is a purposeful, powerful way to pursue good and expose injustice. Art is loud!

This gallery offers teachers, educators, and curious students the opportunity to engage with environmental issues through the medium of comics. Lesson plans, galleries, and tutorials are available on this website. By bringing comics into the classroom, this project aims to include a wider audience in the discipline of environmentalism. All work on this website is free to use and distribute for educational purposes.
